Len, Beautiful shot. I want to be there.

Yes this was taken on Friday May 1st around noon. The colours you see mainly result from the lowish but flat cloud formations which gave everything a more bluish cast than usual, this helped set off the golden colours of the sand and made it seem more saturated than usual. A couple of hours or so later and most of the clouds had disappeared and this same scene would have looked radically different.

I’m really amazed what some of these cameraphones can do.

I’m quite impressed myself – but these cameras are quite limited – for example they have a pretty crude metering and cannot accept a very wide range of light intensity without getting ‘blowoutts’ (areas of image that are pure white etc). It is a matter of understanding the limits of the camera and then working within that. Overcast days like the one this photo was taken are often quite good conditions for these cameras as they do not have many high contrasts between light and dark areas and hence little or no ‘blowouts’.
